Aya Abe’s “Dream Together” (2021) is created on washi (Japanese paper) with techniques to position the powder of crushed natural and artificial rocks and naturally dyed soils with nikawa. Used by Hokusai and Jakuchu Ito, nikawa was a commonly used glue in Japanese paintings during the Edo period. At times, she uses metal foils and silver foils in her paintings. When painting a single color, she puts the colored powder on a paint plate, pours the same amount of nikawa glue, and kneads it with her finger. It is a time consuming process, but the layered texture of the nikawa artwork creates a pictorial space that cannot be produced with any other medium. The artwork also changes depending on the amount of light and the viewing angle.
